When the Traunsee Turns Into an Airport
Somewhere between alpine postcard and Top Gun training exercise
Batty was peacefully enjoying the Traunsee atmosphere…
coffee in hand, mountains perfectly posing in the background, tourists feeding ducks with full Austrian determination…
…and suddenly:
A low roaring turboprop appeared over the lake.
Then another one.
Then another water pickup directly from the Traunsee like somebody unlocked a real-life aviation simulator over Upper Austria.
Welcome to one of the most fascinating things you can witness around the Salzkammergut:
the Airtractor firefighting aircraft in action.
These specialized firefighting aircraft — operated by Aquarius Aerial Firefighting — are usually stationed during exercise periods at Flugplatz Gmunden-Laakirchen, known in aviation circles as LOLU.
Depending on logistics, fuel requirements or maintenance needs, larger airports such as Flughafen Linz may also become part of the operation.
But the real spectacle happens directly above the lake.
The Airtractors descend unbelievably low over the Traunsee, touch the water surface for only seconds, collect thousands of liters of water almost in one smooth motion… and climb away again towards the next simulated firefighting run.
And honestly?
Watching this from the shore feels surreal.
One moment the lake looks like a calm tourism commercial.
The next moment it feels like Austria opened its own tiny version of an aerial firefighting command center.
What makes it even more impressive is the precision.
These pilots are not “just flying low.”
They operate with ridiculous accuracy between mountains, wind conditions, changing lake surfaces and constantly shifting aircraft weight during pickup.
As a private pilot, Batty can officially confirm:
this is the kind of flying where your pulse probably remains somewhere around takeoff power settings the entire day.
And unlike many airshows…
this is not about smoke machines, Instagram maneuvers or aviation ego.
This is functional flying.
Purpose-built.
Raw aviation skill.
Which somehow makes it even cooler.

Batty verdict:
If you ever happen to be near the Traunsee during these training days — stop whatever you are doing for a moment and watch.
Because seeing specialized firefighting aircraft skimming across one of Austria’s most beautiful lakes while the Alps sit quietly in the background…
…is peak aviation romance.
With a slight smell of kerosene and wet lake water. Exactly how Batty likes it.
